744 Chimney Fires in West Yorkshire Over the Last Decade

Shocking new figures from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service reveal that there have been 744 chimney fires in the region over the past ten years, highlighting the critical importance of regular chimney maintenance to keep homes and families safe.

Swept. Chimney Sweeping Services is urging homeowners to take proactive steps to prevent chimney fires by scheduling professional chimney sweeping at least once a year, depending on fuel type and usage.

Regular sweeping helps to remove soot and creosote build-up, reducing the risk of dangerous chimney fires. Additionally, it promotes the safe and efficient operation of appliances, which in turn helps to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality.

Chimney fires occur when creosote – a highly flammable substance that builds up from burning wood, coal, or other fuels – ignites inside the chimney. When a chimney fire breaks out, it can be an incredibly terrifying experience for homeowners. Loud roaring noises, thick smoke billowing into the home, and even flames shooting from the chimney can create a panic-inducing situation. The intense heat can cause chimney liners to fail and brickwork to crack. Firefighters often respond to chimney fires that have spread into attics and roofs, putting entire homes at risk. These fires can cause significant damage to property, put lives at risk, and may even lead to structural collapse.

HETAS, a leading organisation dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient use of solid fuel appliances, fuels, and services recently reported that 2,126 chimney fires occurred in England, Wales, and Scotland during 2023/24. Shockingly, 40% of these happened between January and March in England alone!

HETAS, recommended chimney sweeping frequency:

Wood-burning appliances: At least twice a year

Smokeless fuel appliances: At least once a year

Frequently used appliances, including commercial settings: More frequent sweeping may be necessary

Gary Walker, owner of Swept. and HETAS approved Sweep & maintenance technician, is calling on residents to act now to prevent unnecessary fires.

"These figures from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are a stark reminder of just how dangerous neglected chimneys can be. A chimney fire can spread in minutes, causing serious damage—but the good news is, it’s almost entirely preventable!

Regular professional sweeping removes dangerous soot and creosote build-up, keeping chimneys safe and working efficiently. And it’s not just homeowners who need to stay on top of this—pubs, restaurants, and hotels that rely on open fires or wood-burning stoves also need to book regular sweeps to avoid business interruptions. A blocked or unsafe chimney doesn’t just put staff and customers at risk; it can also lead to costly closures and loss of trade.

Landlords should also be aware of their responsibility to maintain chimneys in rental properties with wood-burning stoves. Keeping up with regular sweeping ensures tenant safety and helps meet legal obligations.

The simple solution? Book a regular chimney sweep and enjoy peace of mind knowing your home, business, or rental property is safe and running smoothly."
