Feet by the fire

Making the most of your log burner this festive season

As the festive season approaches, there’s nothing quite like the warmth and glow of a fire to set the Christmas atmosphere. Whether it’s the crackle of the wood or the cosy heat, a log burner  can be the heart of your home. To ensure it's safe, efficient, and enjoyable here are our top festive tips:

1. Have your chimney swept
If you’ve not used your log burner since last winter, having your chimney swept is a crucial first step. Creosote build up, soot, and debris can all pose significant fire hazards, and a professional sweep will clear the way for safe use. Plus, if Santa’s planning to visit, he’ll thank you for a clean flue!

We recommend having your chimney swept annually, especially if it’s only used seasonally.

2. Use seasoned or kiln-dried wood
For the best burn, always use properly seasoned or kiln-dried wood. Freshly cut or damp wood can create excessive smoke and tar deposits in your chimney, reducing efficiency and increasing fire risks. Look for logs with a moisture content below 20%, which you can check using a moisture meter.

If you’re stocking up, store your wood in a dry, well-ventilated area to keep it in top condition. A tidy log pile can even add to the rustic festive charm of your home!

3. Keep decorations and combustibles at a safe distance
Christmas is a time for decorations, but it’s important to keep them away from your log burner. Garlands, tinsel, stockings, and even your beautifully wrapped presents should be placed away from the stove to avoid accidental fires.

Also don't forget to make sure you keep your firewood a safe distance from the stove too.

4. Test your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms
Make sure your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are in good working order. If you don't already have a carbon monoxide alarm we recommend purchasing one and installing it in the correct position, see HETAS advice on this here.

5. Correct disposal of ash
Ash build up in the burner can impact its performance, so make it a habit to clean out the grate regularly. Use a metal ash bucket to dispose of cooled ash safely and keep it away from combustible materials.

6. Avoid a cold air plug
A cold air plug (also referred to as a "cold plug") occurs when cold air settles inside the flue or chimney of your solid fuel stove, blocking the flow of warm air. This can prevent the stove from drawing air efficiently and may even reverse the draft, causing smoke and fumes to enter the living space instead of escaping up the chimney. See our advice blog here on how to avoid it.

Conclusion
Using your log burner during the festive period can elevate the Christmas experience, turning your home into a cosy haven. By following these simple tips, you’ll ensure your stove operates safely and efficiently, leaving you free to enjoy Christmas with peace of mind.
